The group started way back in 1982 as backing for Belkis Concepcion, but were soon to emerge as the most influental & powerful female Latin band ever. Belkis Concepcion would eventually start a successful solo career.
In 1983 Lead vocalist Miriam Cruz joined their ranks and along came a new name: Las Chicas Del Can. Las Chicas had it all: the looks, the musical skills and the attitude. Over the years they scored a string of hits which include now classic songs like Juana La Cubana, Papi Tu, Besos Callejeros, Pegando Fuego, El Negro No Puede, 'Ta Pillao, Cunde Cunde, Culeca, Las Pequeñas Cosas, Estupido, Amigo Travieso, Mas Que Mas, Por Que Tengo Ganas, Fiebre, Me Duele (El Cuerpecito) and many, many more. Not only were they very successful in their own country Santo Domingo/Rep. Dominicana, or the whole of (Latin) America for that matter, but their succes reached all the way to European Countries. After 10 successful years and many gold & platinum albums Las Chicas Del Can decided to break up with their producer/manager Wilfrido Vargas. After that they signed a contract with Karen Records (Juan Luis Guerra's label). They couldn't use the name Las Chicas Del Can anymore, so from this moment on they call themselves Miriam Y Las Chicas. Miriam Cruz Y Las Chicas dropped a brand new album called Nueva Vida. With songs written by the "King Of Merengue" Juan Luis Guerra, Ramon Orlando, and Manuel Jimenez it proved to be a mature album. Album includes hits such as La Loba, Dos Rosas, Tu Volveras, Te Propongo and Tomelo Tu. In 1995 they recorded songs for a new album which included hits like Quiero Hacerte El Amor and Maldon. They also had a major hit with the song Con Agua De Sal and Miriam Cruz recorded songs with DL1 (Todo Por Tu Amor) and with the very populair merengue artist Sergio Vargas (Buenos Amigos). After slowing down a bit on the musical carreer, Miriam Cruz and her Chicas suddenly return with an all new merengue album entitled Punto Y Aparte. Due to popular demand also many compilation albums have been released with some of their greatest successes. Their smash hit album Caribe has been re-released too and is still selling like crazy, which proves that they still ain't done yet. Miriam Cruz Y Las Chicas already managed to outlive their offspring and have obtained the status of true legends. They are leading the way for a new generation of merengue artists and it looks like it's going to be Miriam Cruz Y Las Chicas forever! |
